Any speculation as to what the potion was?? Dumbledore isn't particularly one of my favourite characters, but I felt awful for him when I was reading that part of the book |

I'm guessing it's one we haven't encountered yet, but I'm certain Dumbledore knew what it was.
Either that, or it was an original Voldemort cocktail... |

Perhaps both?
We know that JKR seldom belabors points that are not eventually significant. During the Potions class on antidotes (one of the few class periods we actually see this year), we find out that for some poisons there is *no* antidote. I tend to think that this potion in the basin was exactly that...and that Dumbledore knew it.
I am very suspicious of how much Dumbledore knew about the cave. He knew where it was. He knew how to get in. He knew not to touch the water. And he figured out that it was necessary to drink the potion in order to get the locket, which isn't something that seems at all obvious. Now, either Dumbledore is having another flash of inexplicable omniscience, or he knew more about all of it in advance than he told Harry. I'm still working on how. (I'm inclined to think Regulus, although I haven't sorted out how that would work without Dumbledore also having known that the locket would be a fake. Perhaps whoever was *with* Regulus, if someone was. Which might possibly be Snape?)
Anyway, I'm almost certain that the info in Potions class that not all poisons have antidotes is meant to point to this potion in the basin as being one of those.

Pity Harry didn't have a Bezoar (sp?) to stick in Dumbledore's mouth, to test the theory |

So you're implying that the potion was the horcrux, and by having Snape kill him, the horcrux was destroyed?
Hmm, interesting theory. Sauf the fact that someone has already been there and they had to get rid of the potion the first time around and recreate it. Now if the original potion was really the horcrux, why would they put a fake locket there? Why not just recreate a potion similar to the horcrux and put it in there? |

I meant to say, "Yes, unfortunately, I get it."
But still, the potion that Dumbledore drank did not consist of LV's wank juice.
Maybe some sleep would be a good thing. |

can't sleep blah, assignment due tomorrow. The Non-Existence of God, for Philosophy class. thank god for Nietzsche.
but i digress.
maybe the potion, while not being the soul of Voldemort, might be the *something* of voldemort... kinda like pensieve juice or something... that's why dumbledore said stuff like 'i killed them' or something, while drinking... heh. dumbledore was living through voldemort's life or something. .. how come nobody analysed what dombledore actually said duiring the drinking? i can't, coz i bowwored my copy from a friend, and returned it coz of the long waiting list :/ it sells for RM100 here in Malaysia. aaargh. comparison: a can of pepsi goes for RM1.50. so figure it out. hah. |

My friend just suggested this.
If Dumbledore could get the glass into the bowl to scoop up the potion, why did he not test out the theory that maybe he could dump the potion in the water?
Good point.
Also, we do not KNOW that he knew not to touch the lake. He could have just been guessing not to touch that water. Knowing that it involved Voldemort, it was most potentially dangerous.
Also, he did not exactly KNOW how to get in. He said he basically "read" the magic in the walls.
He said he had tracked down the cave, but he may have, true.
Thoughts? |

Yea....and what was the deal when Harry was trying to give Dumbledore water from the goblet but the water kept vanishing? WHAT was that all about?
I really need to go back and re-read that chapter but it was SO hard to read the first time. It just made me miserable when Dumbledore was begging and moaning and pleading for Harry to either stop or kill him.
It really broke my heart. I know, that is sappy! But wow, that scene really upset me. |

Since I'm in the Snape-is-still-good camp, I can't help drawing an interesting parallel between Harry's actions here and Snape's on the tower, assuming that Snape was acting on Dumbledore's orders. I wonder if that will ever occur to Harry.
