*Delirium after the wonderful Sandman character? I adore her!

Yup! I also do Sandman fanfic, though I haven't worked on my Sandman WIP in forever! I thought I had it up on Chaos, but I don't. I'll get it up there - thanks for the reminder! (I put up the prologue, but I guess I'm not validated on Chaos like I am on most of the other archives).

I just started working on a new fic for Ashwinder..Oh the possibilities!! I'm actually excited by the prospect.

I'm not sure if it was about being childish for Snape to refer to himself as the Half-Blood Prince. He was talking to Harry, who had no idea that young Snape was his helper through Potions.

I think he was just saying, "You brat, don't use what I created against me! I AM the Half-Blood Prince, you idiot."

I kind of agree with the idea that Snape didn't create the Half-Blood Prince title for himself. Think about this: he's a very intelligent, very creepy little boy. We've seen through Hermione that intelligence is not always seen as a good thing - especially in the first few years of school. On top of that, he's a Half-blood tossed into Slytherin, a house that is just dripping in blood-purity issues.

They may have just called him a Half-blood, but I think somewhere along the line, someone learned his mother's maiden name, and styled him the Half-Blood Prince to mock him. I can see Snape being very self-hating, and using the title almost sarcastically - I think he would find it amusing in a twisted sort of way, that once again someone with Muggle blood has shown up the Purebloods at Hogwarts. And when he uses the title with Harry? Perhaps it has become his own private way of mocking himself - he wouldn't be the first person to be haunted by a childish taunt of a classmate through adulthood, especially if he had been hurt by it at the time.

I think possibly Snape did create it himself but he was still using it sarcastically. I also see him as self-hating with very low self-esteem. So when he was calling himself the Half-blood Prince he was really saying that he felt like he was a freak, a loser, a nobody, a nothing. Purebloods basically see Muggles as less than human so a half-blood would be considered half-human?

I can see him a trapped in the cycle of hate. He probably hated his father for being a Muggle and his mother for marrying a Muggle and hated himself for being what he probably considered an abomination.

And Snape doesn’t seem to want to be happy. I can almost see him taking some sort of warped enjoyment or strange satisfaction by wallowing in his own misery.

Very similar to LLV…it is shocking. When I first started reading Harry Potter I thought Snape was bad. Then I was introduced to fan fiction and I fell in with everyone else who thought there was something good in him and he just need to be reminded that he was a good person. You know, love conquers all.

Well, I don’t think it is going to work with Snape.

When he told Harry that he was the Half Blood Prince I think that was to mock Harry because Snape knew that Harry had his book. And Snape knew that Harry was doing well in potions because of the book. Harry practically used the book as a bible. Every time he wanted an idea to figure something out he turned to the book! Harry was taking advice from someone he hated. Snape would love to rub that in Harry’s face.

I need to reread HBP before I can argue any specific points or theories, (I was half asleep when I read it straight through starting at 1 am.) but I in no way see this as ruining Snape as a great character. He is far more morally ambiguous now, but in my mind that just makes him more interesting. I still don’t see him as simply good or evil, he is likely the most complex character in the books. Thus, I see this as a potential for some wonderful new fics. (But hopefully not the already clichéd ‘Hermione saves the day and Snape along the way’ fics.)

I see Snape surviving as a romantic interest, if not a romantic character. I see SS/HG surviving, both as HBP compliant and older, more AU. And I see far more potential for speculation as to Snape’s real character and motives now than previously.

This is pretty much how I feel too (especially now that I'm sober and not 2 bottles to the wind like before... The things JKR does to us!) and it will make for much more interesting fanfic. I'm still sailing up the river of denial (in some people's opinion) as there is enough well-constructed argument around that he is not bad. We will see next time - after all, no one really knows for sure.

I hope people do keep writing HG/SS but I have to say I won't miss "meddling Dumbledore of the twinkling eyes and lemon drops". Don't get me wrong, I liked Dumbledore, but just not some of the incarnations of him in fics.

I suppose there is nothing to stop Harry having a heart to heart with Dumbledore's portrait hanging in Hogwarts. Do portraits have all the knowledge of that person? The others seem to.

It seems to me the portraits would have all the knowledge and memories of the person up until the time the portrait was created. Since the portrait of Dumbledore appeared in his office right after his death it would appear it was created upon his death. I think it might become important in the future, and maybe might even serve to either condemn or redeem Snape.

I think that JKR has said in some interview or other that portraits are actually much more limited than they appear to be.

What I've wondered is whether the magic that creates portraits is in any way connected to the Horcruxes. After all, they do seem to capture some small fragment of the person's personality. In fact, before we learned about the horcruxes, I hadn't questioned Tom's diary any further because of the portrait magic.

I, too, think Snape was being sarcastic when he called himself ¨The Half Blood Prince¨ .

Perhaps he did not come up with that name, perhaps his peers did...perhaps the Marauders (or one of them) did.

No. The Marauders called him Snivellus and that was his nickname throughout school.
