I've just been reading The Lioness Prophecies by amr, and in it Hermione acquires some of the Snape family magic through being with Snape's great grandfather when he died. Later on, there is a discussion that Muggleborns are a result of 'free magic' in the air, and that the Pureblood families have specific 'hexas' that are identifiable to their family.
Anyway, as I read that, I remembered another story where something similar was discovered, and there was a ceremony at Hogwarts where Muggleborns could find out which Pureblood family they were 'related' to. I have a funny feeling that the Creeveys were related to the Malfoys, but that could be me misremembering.
Does anyone know the story I'm babbling about?

I've found the story in question. It's Harry Potter and the Trip to the Past by Priya Ashok. It's actually a story about Harry travelling back in time and appearing in his younger self's body. Not SS/HG at all, but it does have Muggleborn student finding out what Wizarding families they are related to as I recalled (complete with Creevey family related to the Malfoys)
