Hi,

I'm fairly new to this site and I've had the admin contact me regarding mistakes in my stories even as small as missed commas. It's very helpful and I'm amazed that they take the time to do that.

However, the chapter which I am currently writing includes Hagrid as a major character. If I attempted to make his speech gramatically correct, or even to spell all the words correctly, he would seem very out of character. This could also be true of other characters who aren't adept at grammar themselves.

So, what are the rules about correct grammar in dialogue? How would the staff treat this kind of situation?

sauerkraut_poet,

For Hagrid's speech, we're not really picky on the grammar and spelling of words, since many of the things he says are spelled more as they sound rather than being spelled correctly. As long as what he's saying makes sense and is understandable, you should be fine. Proper punctuation, however, (such as direct address commas and correct dialogue punctuation), is still required.

I hope this helps!
