I'm plotting out a new fic and I'd like to know a few things now, rather than after I've written the whole thing and discover the plot doesn't work :*)

I need to know about Muggle marriage law, in London and Scotland in the early 1970s.

How old do the couple need to be to marry without their parents consent?

What sort of documentation would have to be provided as proof of age?

Were there blood tests? A required waiting period?

Would the Gretna Green thing have worked to bypass the requirements?

Were there any additional requirements for a church (C of E) wedding?

There will have to be at least one scene in the home of a Muggle-born wizard, so a volunteer old enough to remember who could pick over those bits would be very welcome.

It's about the same as now.
You can get married at 16 with parents permission 18 without.
Birth certificate and proof of address is usually requested.
No blood tests for marriage are exacted.
GG requires a special licence which can take about a week to obtain. It's not like in the old days. The balcksmith anvil is still there with souvenier shop! It's a bit tacky.
C&E marriages required one of the couple to be 'of the parish' and 3 weeks of Banns are required to be read. Being 'of the parish' means living there. This has now changed. Churches especially then required that it is the church that you attended. Banns are advance notices that are posted outside the church for everyone to read and hopefully not object.
I'm not totally au fait with all the regulations in Scotland.
Hope this has helped in some way.

My mum is from scotland and her first husband was from england. they got married in 1971. My mum was 19 at the time. She found out she was pregnant when she got home from a trip to england and was sent back to Manchester to marry the culprit!!!

They were married 10 days after she found out she was pregnant.
(She was 5 weeks gone by this time!)
They were married in a registry office, you have to apply for a marriage license which took several days to be approved.

Hope this info is of some use 2 you?

Cheers

That is very helpful. Do you by any chance know what sort of paperwork they needed for the application? Presumably some proof of age, what would they take? If it took some days for approval, there must be some checking done. If someone came in with a fake ID does anyone know if they would likely have gotten away with it?
