One might think that this cowering woman is weak. One might think that this shouting man is cruel. But life - and love - are hardly ever as simple as one might think.

We found out more about Snape's parentage in Half-Blood Prince, and some of it surprised me, because I'd made assumptions about his parents based on the little snippet of memory that Harry saw in Order of the Phoenix, and these naive assumptions didn't fit the new information particularly well. I decided to try reimagining Snape's parents, and go for a decidedly non-simple interpretation of their relationship - yes, their marriage must have had some dark moments, but genuine love and dark moments are unfortunately not mutually exclusive. |
