Hi, y'all:
I've never written fanfiction before, but I've enjoyed reading it for over a year. I'm in the process of writing a long, smuty story (SS/OFC) and it will most likely be forty to fifty chapters in length. I already have finished an outline, background, and several chapters (appearently the writing muse kicked me in the ass). Here is where I need the opinions of the creative writers and excellent betas of Sycophant Hex.
Do you think it is better to submit the work to a beta while in the midst of writing, or waiting until the story is complete?

It depends on what you want to use your beta for.
For short stories and ones shots, I just have one beta who doesn't see it until the work is done.
For longer stories, I have 2 betas that I normally use, although sometimes more I use more. One I use while I writing the story - she goes through and tells me if I'm lagging, or if something sounds off, or if I just haven't explained something right. I usually send her everything just before I'm finished with the story, just in case I have to do some major revisions to fix it (so far, haven't needed to do much though).
My second beta is grammar, punctuation and canon patrol - she catches the crap that I don't - waste instead of waist, their instead of there, and things of that nature.
Followed by a third and fourth beta who will look at everything - plot consistency, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Some people need the constant on the ball beta sort who will work on those things, and others only need a beta for spelling and grammar, it just depends on what you want a beta to do for you. |
