It recently occurred to me that there are some interesting parallels between HP and SWTWC, since both involve a young boy who falls afoul of a mysterious and seemingly immortal man who possesses evil powers and who ruins the lives of those who put their trust in him. With that thought, a Plot Bunny was born...although this particular Plot Bunny, it would seem, is distinctly not the cute-n-fuzzy variety and is something more along the lines of the Black Rabbit of Inle from "Watership Down"! A potential title might be "Harry Potter and the Pandemonium Carnival"...

Anyway, it struck me that "Nightshade" sounds like the perfect name for a wizarding family -- particularly with its botanical connotations. What if Jim Nightshade was a wizard, and that this was the reason why Mr. Dark was drawn to him? (For that matter, perhaps Tom Fury was much more than he seemed to be -- and was in fact trying to protect Jim.) It might also explain why Jim's father abandoned them -- perhaps he thought that Mr. Dark would leave them alone or wouldn't find them if he weren't with them. For that matter, maybe Harry Potter is named after Jim's father, Harry Nightshade! Bringing Jim's child or grandchild, or maybe even Jim himself, to England and teaming him (or her) up with the Order of the Phoenix -- whether by accident or intention -- seems to present a couple of intriguing possibilities. For one...how would Mr. Dark and Voldemort perceive each other? Have they encountered each other before, perhaps? Will they choose to join forces against their enemies, or will each regard the other as another threat to his own power? For another...since Mr. Dark seems to possess the ability to know other people's most desperate desires, was he perhaps involved in the creation of the Mirror of Erised?

Aw, man! It's been decades since I read that book.... Interesting idea for a cross-over, though.
