Dear Saphira,
‘Mary Sue’ is often a pejorative term, but another point of view is that Mary Sues empower the disenfranchised. The story with Mary Sue in it was a parody, but it did have a female at the helm of a starship. The people who write Mary Sues give a voice to minorities ignored by popular culture. I have misplaced the reference, but this point of view has developed into a social-legal defense of fan fiction.
