Tim Roth was offered the part as Professor Snape first, but rejected and instead Alan Rickman was offered it - and accepted...
Do you think that Alan Rickman was the right choice for Snape?
In my opinion I think they did a very good casting on Snape...
-Alan Rickman might be a bit "fat" for Snape though!
What do you think? Please post your opinions... |

"Who is that fat bastard masquerading as Professor Snape"
Sorry.
1. Snape is 36 or so at the end of OOTP.
2. He's thin.
Rickman an abysmal miscast on both counts.
PS I like Alan. He's not Snape. |

Well...on one hand, he plays the part very well; he certainly has the talent for sarcasm that the role demands, and (probably due to the times he played the villain for past roles) he does an excellent job of portraying the grace and often not-so-subtle malice that we see in Snape in the books. This, as well as his much-praised voice, are probably the biggest assets he brings to this role. (Truth be told, if I hadn't read Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility" before I saw the movie, I'd have thought that Colonel Brandon was a villain due to the first few seconds when we see him in the film, because Rickman's so good at that sort of role--but I digress.)
However, I'm afraid that I must agree with azazello on some level, at least; no matter how good the makeup job, a man who's nearly sixty shouldn't play the part of a man who's in his mid-thirties. Half of playing a part is looking it, unless you're doing voice for an animated character. Rickman doesn't look the part, or at least, he doesn't normally.
So in conclusion, I'd have to say that Rickman as Snape is OK, but it might have been nice to see someone else in the role who can act and look the part. (Shallow maybe, but there we go. )
Edited to correct some atrocious punctuation. |

Don't suppose you're doing a Snape vs Snape V?
You'll note that they rather miscast everybody in Snape's generation, age-wise. Harry's parents had to be pushing 35 or 40 in that photo in HP 1. I suppose David Thewlis is about the right age, but I'm not so sure about Gary Oldman.
I love Alan Rickman - he has the perfect vocal manner and overall air for Snape (and he's Marvin the robot's voice in the Hitchhiker's Guide, another brilliant fit) - but he is a bit chunky and old for the part. I don't wonder if David Thewlis would have been a better Snape... I absolutely hate him as Lupin. He will forever be the whiny, evil prince from Dragonheart, to me. |

Ha! SvS V is written and drawn, I'm just holding off on posting it. I've got them written and drawn ten in advance, but I'm trying to not to be a premature art ejaculator.
I'm going to hold them hostage until someone writes me SvS meta-slash. heh |

When I watch Alan Rickman as Snape I don't see a man nearly 60 and that is what makes Alan so good in the job. I do see Snape in him. Oldman and Thewlis don't look their ages either in my opinion, but that doesn't take away from how well they played their parts. |

I guess I'm too focused on the character itself, rather than seeing jowls or a little paunch. As far as I'm concerned, he is Snape.
One could find fault with every actor who is playing a part in that movie I guess. Emma's hair definitely isn't as bushy as it should be. Harry's hair isn't standing up, this Dumbledore certainly is too young to be 150. |

I think McGonagall looked older than Dumbledore in POA, if we are going to talk about horrible age casting.
I personally liked Sir Michael Gambon as Dumbledore, even if I am in the minority. His characterisation of Dumbledore was more in line with how I read Dumbledore in the books.

I have to definitely agree that Alan Rickman, a very talented actor with a wonderful voice, is too old to play Snape. And considering the fact that Snape is supposed to be skinny...
In my minds eye, I see someone else but I do hear Rickman.
But I really think they did cast the Marauders generation as being a good 20 years older than they are in the books. I really don't know why they did that. But I even thought Harry's parents appeared a good 10 years older in the Mirror of Erised than they should have.
I'll run away and hide now. |

I imagine a younger Rickman (say, circa Robin Hood) would've been perfect. He had more nervous energy back then, too. |
