I'm starting this topic to showcase what every thinks is the best of the best in Hermione Granger fanfiction!

Let's kick it off with Roman Holiday,
http://www.witchfics.org/anna/romanholiday/index.html a fabulous novel length fic (by Anna) about Hermione coming in to her own and showing everyone exactly what she's made of. Though she's mainly with Draco in the fic, the subsequent sequals are just as good, and pair her off with Bill Weasley and Severus Snape respectively.

Also worth mentioning on witchfics is The Other Side of Darkness by Abby, http://www.witchfics.org/abby/tosod.html an interesting fic set about eight years after graduation, in which Harry asks Hermione to uncover the mysteries of an unknown potion. As she turns to Severus for help, they are swept off into a dangerous world.

A newer fic that I've absolutely fallen in love with is The Twenty by Leyna Rountree. It's a deliciously long Severus/ Hermione fic that very much puts Hermione through hell before the end, but has a lot of great themes about the power of women and virgins. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1844462/1/

Hinge of Fate by Ramos http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1024910/1/ is quite possibly my favorite piece of fanfiction of all time. Excellent characterization, excellent plot, excellect writing. HG/SS.

The last fic I will mention before I go is Hayseed's Dark God's in the Blood http://www.schnoogle.com/authorLinks/Hayseed/Dark_Gods_In_The_Blood/. It's significantly darker than the other fics I mentioned, but every bit as good. Harry is dead, Severus is in a mental institution, and Hermione is just back after disappearing for years. She and Snape end up working together with a Lecter/Starling dynamic to find Harry's killer. It gave me chills at times, but I highly highly recommend it. Also while you're there, check out her other fabulous fic Ordinary People.

Everyone else, c'mon and post your favorite Hermione fics!

Hey there.

I completely agree with you, Roman Holiday is brilliant, as are both sequels, Jewel of the Nile: http://www.witchfics.org/anna/jewel/index.html , and Last Tango in Paris: http://www.witchfics.org/anna/tango/ . Does anyone know if Last Tango in Paris is being updates though? It doesnt look like it to me, and I am dying to know what happens next!

The Twenty is also an excellent story, and The Burden of Sight, by Leyna Rountree also is definitely worth reading. http://www.fanfiction.net/u/544694/ There is a link to her profile on FF.net, so you can see the summary for the story.

A Hermione story I have really enjoyed is "Winter's Shadow" by Ravenesque on Astronomy Tower. It is a Hermione/Snape story, and I don't think I have seen it on ashwinder. Here is a link to Ravenesque's profile on AT, so you can see the story summary. http://www.astronomytower.org/authorLinks/Ravenesque/

I do love The Burden of Sight as well, but I didn't want to overly favor one author in my post. Most authors who have an amazing fic often have another one just as good, if not as well known. A fabulous example of this is Hayseed's story Ordinary People, which seems to be less known than Dark God's In the Blood. (It's archived at Schnoogle as well.)

As for your recommendation of Ravenesque's Winter's Shadow, I have to say that I didn't like the fic at all. I felt strongly that it had poor characterization, handfuls of grammatical errors, and little cohesive plot. I didn't feel there was anything extraordinary or even noteworthy in the piece.

Another great Hermione fic ... The Prefect's Portrait by Arsinoe. Here's her summary: "Hermione's quest for a quiet place to read leads to the discovery of a remarkable portrait. The girl in the picture meant so much to so many. She is remembered as a devoted wife and loving mother, but what was she like at sixteen? And how will her reappearance affect the wizarding world?"

All of the characters are very beautifully developed, and Hermione and Snape both seem very much in character.

Best,
Sophie

Ahh, Roman Holiday, the fic that character assassinated Hermione and turned Snape into the sixth member of Queer Eye.

No wonder it's a classic.

I think you are getting it mixed up with queer eye for the snape guy (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1495793/1/)!!

Very Happy

No she is not. RH bears about as much relation to Hermione Granger as Bram Stoker's Dracula is a historical depiction of Vlad Tepes.

Mmhmm. Crayon coloured shirts, my arse.

Just because a fic is old and over-hyped doesn't mean that it's good.

Roman Holiday - *groan* Should be banished from fandom....

I think I've actually forgotten what canon Hermione is even like. She is a teenaged virgin sex goddess right? Just checking.... Rolling Eyes

There are numerous stories that star Hermione in her best Canon self. To name a few:

"But You Alone" by Azazello shows an incredibly interesting Hermione, kept canon and realistic. No Mione Suism here. Flaws exist in this Universe...

http://www.sycophanthex.com/ashwinder/viewuser.php?uid=470

The link is to the author's directory on Ashwinder.

Another story is Pigwidgeon37's "The Sybil's Oracle", one of the Classics in HG/SS genre, or at least I think so. And if you like Lucius Malfoy, you just have to read it. Some slight chan tones, but the story explains them believably. It was lost, now it is found:

(Hmm... actually, the story consists of three books and Hermione appears only in the third one, the previous are strictly Snape-centric.)

http://www.obscurusbooks.org/html/pigwidgeon37/TSO3/

Really worth a read despite being a Probably-Abandoned-WIP (the author cannot be contacted). But there are more wonderful stories by the author, all well worth a read. Some of her stories are, sadly, still lost, so if anyone has them archived, I am sure the Mistress of Obscurus would be delighted to hear from You.

And last, not least, I would like to propose a different, twisted take on Hermione - what if Hermione's friends don't really know her and her past is full of secrets? Perhaps she isn't as happy as she seems... Well worth a read story written in collaboration by Melissande and Areola, titled "Needfire".

http://archive.skyehawke.com/story.php?no=3570

Interesting and well worth a look.

I would also recommend Snapesforte's "Taking Over Me" but as it's already rec'ed in the "Canon Snape" column... Oh, I will go and rec it anyway. It is an underrated story that deserves many more reviews than it has.

Now, I'd only like to second the Hayseed and Abby recommendations. These stories are really well written.

As to Ramos - I have a sentiment for the "Hinge of Fate", but I am not sure if it was Hermione that I liked best about that story.

And I shall state that all the stories I named are HS/SS. Just in case...

I just wanted to post Abby and Anne's web site www.potions-master.com. It contains all their wonderfull SS/HG fiction including The Fire and the Rose 1&II and Anne's "Round Midnight," which is about Snape and Hermione recreating the Philosopher's stone. These are the first Harry Potter fanfiction stories that I read, and I find myself going back to them again and again. (It definitely got me addicted!!)

I'm new to this forum. I have read many HG/SS fics.

I really like "But For You Alone"by azazello and "Cloak of Courage" by WendyNat. Both can be found on Ashwinder.

I also found a great WIP on schoogle called "falling Further In" by KazVL. Not quite canon, but a wonderful read. Flows very nicely. Definitely recommend for HG/SS lovers.

The Twenty was awesome, but not the only fanfiction.com find out there... My absolute favorite SS/HG is When a Lioness Fights by Kayly Silverstorm. It's dark, angsty, and really long (41 chapters and not through yet). Trust me, if you start you'll be hooked!

My favourite SS/HG fic of all time is Regann's 'Heart over Mind'. It is a little longer than what I'd usually read (it's actually immense) but it's well worth it. Both Snape and Hermione are beautifully in character throughout (although it's AU now, as it's set after the Trio have left school and Dumbledore is alive), and the way they get together is completely believable. IMO anyway Very Happy
