I'm tired of every chapter I upload taking two or three times to be posted due to minor punctuation errors, or canon capitalization. While I appreciate the very professional rules of SH, I'm just not detail oriented enough to catch everything.
My grammar and spelling is good, but obviously not perfect, and my canon knowledge is good. It would be helpful if you could keep me honest on British culture and usages, especially during the time period of the Marauders, and especially in the Manchester area.
I've got a backlog of several chapters. Please don't respond to this unless you have time for a reasonable turnaround (2-3 days) per chapter.

Story title: The Highest Value, 5 chapters posted so far on Occlumency
http://occlumency.sycophanthex.com/viewstory.php?sid=4245
Summary: Backstory of Severus Snape, starting sometime in the year before he starts Hogwarts, and continuing at least through the first fall of Voldemort. Slytherins are defined by their ambition, which is defined by each individual Slytherin's "highest value." We obviously know what Voldemort's is. What is Snape's?
Rating: C, possibly to S. My teenage daughter is reading this, so I'm keeping it to a rating that I will let her read. The S will probably be for strong(er) language now and then.
Category/Genres: General. If I had to pick one, it would be historical fiction, on the order of Mary Stewart's Merlin books. This is probably a novel length fic where I am trying to "research" the backstory of Snape.
Ship: None, so far. There will be no slash, as per the rating comments above. If my "research" leads me to infer a Ship, it will happen. However, I have no particular leanings at this time. I think a Snape/Evans romantic relationship is unlikely, but I'm not ruling it out. There is definitely a Snape/Evans friendship.
Warnings: None.
I am fanatical about canon compliance. If you notice anything that seems off, please let me know.
I have a number of editorials over at the Penseive under maryh as well, that describe my views of Slytherin attitudes, including those towards the dark arts, power, and blood purity. These would help you understand where I'm coming from in my Slytherin characterizations. http://www.the-pensieve.org/editorials/index.html
In addition, I have a one-shot at Occlumency called "A Decision" that gives an idea of how I see Tobias Snape. http://occlumency.sycophanthex.com/viewstory.php?sid=4173
Assumptions I am making:
Severus Snape grew up in the house on Spinner's End described in HBP. This house is located in an industrial town close to Manchester. I'm basing the location of Spinner's End on http://borolin.livejournal.com/
Also, I am following this quote, also from that livejournal:
"Incidentally, the fact that Snape probably comes from the industrial north of England defuses a lot of his apparent harshness and nastiness, because it means much of it is just cultural. In that area "surly and antisocial" is rather admired, and rudeness (known as "being blunt") is regarded as a sign of honesty and is cultivated as a virtue."
Snape's father worked in the cotton mills. Snape's mother is not pureblood. In other words, Snape is solidly lower class, by both Muggle and Wizarding standards. Also, Snape was not abused by either parent, who both loved him.
Snape goes to Hogwarts at a difficult time, and will have difficult decisions to make along the way. However, I don't see this as an "angsty" story.
If you've read through this far in the post, especially if you've checked into the urls I've posted, you may be the beta for me. Please PM me through this board. |
