It's odd... we're using physics to describe fictional magic!

I'm *sure* Arithmancy figures heavily into this :*)

I have heard the theory expounded that Dumbledore "knew the end was near". I sort of agree. I don't by any stretch of the imagination believe he had this all planned out, and that he and Snape had it all arranged. I do believe, however, that Dumbledore knew that his demise was a very real possibility, and that he had a contingency plan for it: keeping Harry protected, as he has always done. Sacrificing himself for the greater good.

What no-one to my knowledge had touched upon is the fact that Dumbledore begs Snape to finish him when Draco can't. JK actually uses the word begs, and I feel this is an enormously important part of the story. The idea of Dumbledore manoevering Snape into fulfilling his Unbreakable vow is a good one. Dumbledore, I am sure, would rather die himself than risk Snape's death as Snape is a powerful ally and spy for the Order.

Unlike the Death Eaters, who crumbled when their Leader was vanquished by Lily Potter's love for her son, the Order will, I believe, continue to fight on. Therefore Snape is automatically of higher value than Dumbledore. And Dumbledore knows this. He does not want Snape lost to the Order or dead.

This leads me to believe that Snape is not wholly evil. I'm not pro- or anti-Snape, I'm just stating the logical conclusion from my theory.

Thoughts, anyone?

I thought JKR used the word 'pleading'? And we can't really know what Dumbledore was pleading, since we saw it from Harry's perspective.

My apologies, I got the two words mixed! However they do mean the same thing, so hopefully my meaning was clear.

The point is that although we can't know for certain what Dumbledore is talking about - you're quite right there - the forum is for suppositions, suggestions and predictions regarding the books. This is mine.

My theory is that Dumbledore pleads with Severus to fulfil the Vow he made with Narcissa because Snape is too important in his role for the Order to die - which is what would have happened should he not have completed the task that Draco was set and which Snape swore he would complete upon Draco's failure. We can only assume this task and subsequent Vow was the asassination of Dumbledore.

Therefore, Dumbledore pleads with Snape to fulfil his Unbreakable Vow and survive because Snape's work in the war is not yet done. Dumbledore knows he has done all he can, and is therefore expendable.

That's how I see it, but please feel free to reply if you have a different take on things...I'd love to hear it!

Bye
