Okay, this was somewhat inspired by a very funny thread on Minerva McTabby's live journal the other day. She asked people to make predictons as to what might happen in the book, and then closed the thread, to be revived post publication.

This is a little bit different.

Right, Book 6 of the Series, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince comes out on 16 July 2005. My own copy is already ordered and paid for. I am really looking forward to new canon - for me, fanfic is what I read and write while waiting for canon. There's no fanfic I'm waiting for like I am waiting for the new book.

So what would you like to see in the new book? To kick off the debate, here are a few things I'd really love to see happen.

    1. More Snape

    2. Seriously. More about Snape's backstory, and history. Rowling hinted there were reasons for Sirius and James to hate Snape as well as the canon of book 5 which clearly showed why Snape might hate James and Sirius. I'd like to see more of the background behind that feud.

    3. I'd love to know what Lupin did before he came into the story in book 3.

    4. I'm not in the least bit bothered about any shipping arguments. For me, shipping is something that happens in fanfic, I read the books for their adventure quality.

    5. Those OWL results. I'm keen to know how the characters did.

    6. Who will teach DADA?

    7. If Snape is not DADA, how will the plot work around Harry taking Potions? I'll be disappointed if he gets an "Outstanding" which he needs to take NEWT Potions. And I think he will have Snape as a teacher one way or the other. So I am really intriged as to the plot possibilities around that.

So there's a start. What do others want to see?

Yes, I agree.

1. Definitely more Snape and more about his background!!

2. Probably a bit about Voldemort, his backstory and his rise to power.

3. I expect Sirius to "return" at some point (though actually I don't exactly
wish for it)

4. Aunt Petunia's backstory (how come she hates magic and everything that has to do with it) what has passed between her and her sister and what was in that "first" letter Dumbledore sent her.

5. Why didn't Dumbledore kill Voldemort?

6. More Neville!

7. Probably it is not going to happen before book 7 but from the advice the Sorting Hat gave in OotP I strongly suspect some enemies will have to bond and join forces (possibly Draco/Harry), so there might be a point where Draco has to choose sides... just a hunch I have.

That's my wish list...now could someone please forward that to Jo Rowling? *g*

There are so many questions that I'm unsure where to begin.

1. More on Snape. Backstory or present circumstances. I'm not picky.

2. I also want to know what exactly it is that caused Dumbledore to place his trust in Snape. Or better yet, what happened?

3. OWL results.

4. I'm curious about how widespread the fall out over the Department of Mysteries fiasco is going to be. Are any of those injuries that Hermione, Ron, et al received going to be of the permanent nature?

5. Obviously I'm curious about who is the Half-Blood Prince.

6. More new canon characters perhaps. And who is going to be the new DADA teacher?

7. Will there be a new Minister of Magic? If so - who?

8. The whole Prophecy business and in particular that one scene with Dumbledore and Harry at the end of OTP when Dumbledore gives Harry that, "look of triumph."

9. What will become of Lucius Malfoy, and will he bust out of Azkaban? I also wonder how Draco will adjust to no longer being top dog so to speak, now that daddy is indisposed.

I have one last thing that I'm really looking forward to finding out about. However, this may or may not relate to book six (I'm unsure), and it is also something that refers to a comment made by J.K. Rowling. If you are not reading anything commented on by Rowling I would ask you to kindly skip this last one for your own well being...

10. J.K. Rowling was asked a question about any "late-blooming" magical characters in the Harry Potter books. In other words, the person asking the question wanted to know whether or not an individual could possibly "spark" after the age of 11 and turn out to be magical in nature after all (note that I'm unsure whether or not the questioner was referring to squibs, muggles, or both). Rowling responded with a, "No," but then added that there would be one character who would in fact manage to do magic (later in life) in desperate circumstances.

I want to know who this person is! I want to know if it is a squib or muggle. I'm not holding out hope for it happening in book six actually, I think it will occur in book seven. Being an ironic individual myself, I do have a pretty good idea of who I think it will be (taking into consideration some other comments made by Rowling), but I still want to know.

Well, most of what I'd say has already been addressed here so I'll just add the few things I didn't see specifically.

1. In general, more backstory about the adult characters. All of them. Snape, McGonagall, Lupin, Sirius, Dumbledore, Voldemort, Lucius, etc etc etc. ANd I'd really like to find out what color Lupin's eyes are.

2. I'd like to see Harry reigned in a little-- to see someone say 'ENOUGH!' and come down harder on him.

3. I'd like to see what direction Hermione's taking with her life. Ron and Harry want to be Aurors, but Hermione never made a committment.

4. I'd really like a good explanation of Apparating and Disapparating and how that happens... I literally have dozens of questions about it, which I might post elsewhere and see what others have to say about it.

5. I waver back and forth about Sirius coming back (whether or not I think it will happen, whether or not I want it to happen... Some of my favorite scenes have been Sirius/Snape. They have a great dynamic, and I hate to see that lost)

6. I'm probably alone in this, but I'd love to see some more of the political side of this war.

7. I want to know what the hell an Order of the Phoenix does besides spy on Death Eaters. It sounds like a secret club to me and I seriously roll my eyes at the self-importance of the Order sometimes. I'm wondering if perhaps they're really just treading water and trying to get Harry to grow up so he can fight Voldemort.

8. I want to know whether Dumbledore is as 'good' as he seems.

1. I'm with most of the others here, but along with why Dumbledore trusts Snape, I'd like to know why Snape trusts Dumbledore so much.

Here is a man, who, with proof of one student sending another student into a knowing danger and thereby endangering at least two lives (and more if Remus had somehow gotten out of the Shrieking Shack), did nothing, or next to nothing (at least as far as we know, and I'll grant you we don't know the whole story yet).

Yet Dumbledore is the man Severus goes back to when he wants to defect from the DE's.

Why would Severus ever trust this man who seemed to treat what happened to him as a boyhood prank? Yet he does trust him, or seems to. But what did Dumbledore do to gain, or regain the trust of Severus?

2. Why was James made Head Boy over Lupin, who was a Prefect. His disability wasn't a hindrance to being a Prefect, so that argument won't stand.

3. Snape's true loyalities (probably not until the last book though)

4. Snape's and Hagrid's relationship - Hagrid doesn't like to hear any badmouthing of Snape.

5. Will Ron's great strategy at chess play over into helping the Order defeat Voldemort? That seems to be his strength.

6. And last but not least, please, please, let this be the last book we hear anything of Krum or Fleur - the two characters I probably detest more than Voldemort!

I'd like to see:

1) A good DADA teacher (really, the only good ones have been Lupin and polyjuiced Crouch-as-Moody)

2) A few new, interresting, and good charachters. (fanfic fodder!)

3) More Snape, More Lucius, More Tonks

3) NO Sirius Black...I want him to stay dead, he can be refered to in the past tense, but please, please no more Sirius.

4) Dursleys put in their place. We know he's supposed to have his shortest stay thus far, so I'm hoping the Dursleys get what's coming to them.

5) Harry getting some perspective...he was deep in the whole teen hero self-important pity thing in book five and I hope he matures some more.

6) Hermione...well, I want to learn more about her...not sure what I want to see exacly from her, other than I DON"T want her to get with Ron, but it's inevitable, I'm sure.

I was about ready to slap Harry in book 5 and didn't blame Snape for one minute in how he treated him. I have a daughter about Harry's age and I would never, for one moment, put up with that kind of behavior from her. Someone needs to take him in hand and straighten him up.

Funny you should mention that. I was thinking about it just today and wondering if we'd see another chess game a la the Wizards chess in PS/SS. Here:

Quote:
"We're nearly there," [Ron] muttered suddenly. "Let me think-- let me think..."

The White queen turned her blank face toward him.

"Yes..." said Ron softly, "it's the only way...I've got to be taken."

"NO!" Harry and Hermione shouted.

"That's chess!" snapped Ron. "You've got to make some sacrifices! I take one step foward and she'll take me-- that leaves you free to checkmate the king, Harry!"

"But--"

"Do you want to stop Snape or not?"

"Ron--"

"Look, if you don't hurry up, he'll already have the Stone!"

There was no alternative.

"Ready?" Ron called, his face pale but determined. "Here I go-- now don't hang around once you've won."

I wonder if that isn't the pivotal scene of the final battle as well-- if Ron won't sacrifice himself to open the way for Harry to get to Voldemort. I do think that Ron is good at chess for a reason, and Molly's boggart and... I just really do think that Ron is going to die. I think there's a lot of foreshadowing to suggest it.

Ron is willing to sacrifice himself as we saw in the first book. And I also think that he's going to do it again in the future. I agree that his future doesn't look too good.

More background on Lily.

Lucius Malfoy staying in Azkaban.

Percy Weasley eating crow.

Snape realising that Harry isn't James.

Harry and Ron realising that Snape isn't Voldemort.

No more incompetent DADA teachers. Give the job to Snape already. The build-up has been long enough.

Neville coming into his own.

Ron and Hermione not dating.

An explanation, where the Sorting Hat keeps its brain.

No more Gawp.

No more Trelawney.

The prophecy not meaning that Harry has to kill Voldemort (though I'm happy if that'll be in Book 7).

I can do without new characters. Instead I'd like to see the established characters better developed.

I am not a fan of Superhuman!Hero!Harry who takes it all in a stride. I wouldn't mind if he still carries some anger around.

Then Harry needs to stop acting like James. He is not above the law, he [/i]does need to follow the rules and Snape does deserve some respect from him.

Another thing I'd like to know is when did Snape start making the Wolfsbane potion for Lupin? Before he got to Hogwarts? Is he still making it now? How hard is it to make?

Also, what happened to Lupin after they left school? It seems as though James and Sirius were buddy buddy, but Remus is never mentioned. Why wasn't he made a godfather too? And did Lily have any say in that?
