“A Wizard in Space” Challenge.
I love science fiction. I also love Harry Potter fanfiction. Can the two be successfully combined? Possibly…
Challenge: In the year 2060, Wizards (could be a family or a small team of wizards, perhaps with families) go to the new Martian colony, which has recently opened, after the initial colonists have built basic infrastructure, for select applicants who show qualifications to help build the new world. Their mission is to research if and how magic might work differently on Mars and Space, and also to take the first steps in setting up a secretive wizarding society in a setting which would make anything like the ‘hidden world’ of earth’s wizarding culture highly difficult if it is possible.
You must bring in at least one character we know from the Harry Potter series, this could be anyone from Severus Snape (who would be nearly one hundred years old here) to Neville Longbottom, Luna Lovegood, one of the Weasley kids, Pansy Parkinson, ect. Extrapolate on how the post-canon world and events have affected their personality, but allow room for sixty years of adult personality growth, and bring in good original characters, both Wizard and Muggle. Remember that this will require close interaction with Muggles for much of the story. Also remember that this story will require at least some knowledge of space travel and planetary colonization theory (not a degree in quantum physics -- reading a few good Mars colonization books and having watched some space travel doco's would cover it).
Time limit for story to begin posting is: August 2006. It's a good idea to write at least several chapters ahead, or take the time to fully develop a one-shot.
I personally would imagine something set in Kim Stanley Robinson’s ‘Mars’ series: Red Mars, Green Mars, and Blue Mars, which is an amazing Martian colonization trilogy. This is not a requirement, just a thought. |
