Okay, I'm working on a fic and this is driving me crazy - I want to accurately describe touristy stuff that a teenager can do in London in 1996 and there is no information about this that I can find. I can find current-day info, but nothing from ten years ago. For example, in my hometown (Las Vegas), being under 21 today severly limits your options for the most part. However, ten years ago, there was a major marketing campaign to appeal to families, so a lot of different things were brought in to appeal to people under 21 - like mini-theme parks, roller coasters, family-friendly shows, under 18 clubs, stuff like that. Being under 21, you could still go out and have a good time, no problem. Now, not so much the case. A lot of casinos are taking the family stuff down and putting it aside.
So, back on topic, if you're 16-17 in London in 1996, what can you do? Are there underage clubs? Curfews? (ex: the Strip has a 10 PM weekdays, midnight weekends curfew for minors) What's the legal drinking age? Major touristy things? Trendy spots? I know this is a very broad question, but I can't seem to find this information anywhere.

| there are often under 18 night clubs to go to, especially since the beginning of the 90s...you could also go to "youth clubs" which are usually in large halls in towns or villages where teenagers go to play games, like pool or darts, the one in my local town had a cafe to use, a dance floor area with mix decks for your music and lighting, a snooker/pool table, darts boards, playstation and widescreen tv, a second tv tuned to music channels and a third to cartoons, and also lots of sofas and comfy chairs and stuff to lounge on...does that help? also, alot of kids hang around in bus shelters and parks on the swings and stuff, just to mess around, or joke, or smoke/drink without parents knowledge, especially after dark. |

They've recently changed some of the licencing laws in the U.K. on alcohol, I think; however, I'm not positive on that. From what I can remember you can be under 16 in a licenced restaurant and consume alcohol if it is purchased by a parent or legal guardian. Over 16, but under 18, and you can purchase beer, porter, cider, etc... in a licenced restaurant but not a pub. You have to be 18 or over to purchase and/or consume alcohol in a pub, and must be at least over 14 (15?) to enter a pub. Of course, I can still remember stumbling, quite pissed, out of many a pub at roughly the age of 15 (in the 80's).
I don't remember having any curfew when I was that age, and I am from London. I'm not sure what it is like in Las Vegas, but what they would be doing depends on whether or not they live in London or are simply visiting. If they live in London they are much less likely to target the touristy spots (think, been there, done that, got the t-shirt).
I agree with the above poster. Parks, video game arcades, night clubs, etc... would more than likely be the choice. Incidently, one popular place is Oxford Street, where you can find all of the above mentioned establishments.
