I think that it was after they took their O.W.L.s at the end of their fifth year, based on Snape's memories in the seventh book. There, pre-O.W.L. Lily mentions that Snape has a theory of the Mauraders, but basically says that what Snape's friends are doing it far, far worse.
But then, I can see Snape trying to win himself back into Lily's graces by proving that her new friends are dangerous, and failing to do so by uncovering a secret that Dumbledore swears him to keep, and almost losing his life in the process, which should have been warning enough about the consequences of spying.
It is interesting that, of Snape's memories that Harry sees, that the werewolf discovery one is not among them, that losing Lily was far worse than what happened in the Shrieking Shack, even though Snape referred to while he was alive. |
